Setting Up a Blog

It's quite easy to either create a website as a blog or to add a blog to an existing website. I recommend WordPress.Org (as opposed to WordPress.com) because you maintain full ownership and control of your content. The software is free and very easy to install in a directory or add-on domain on your existing site at no additional cost to you.

WordPress is a content management system (CMS) that creates a user-friendly platform for managing your site. Within WordPress, you can create content in a Word-like environment which means you don't need to know how to code web pages. WordPress “themes” control the look and feel of your site and again, there are so many available (free and paid) that you can create any look you want for little or no cost.

Additionally, developers have been building “plugins” for close to 10 years yielding an incredibly rich library of functionality that can be added to your site. Plugins are simply add-ons for WordPress that allow even greater flexibility and customization for your site. Plugins are available that allow the creation of membership sites, for extra security, for connecting social media sites, for just about anything you want to add to your site.

Between themes and plugins, there is so much flexibility in WordPress today that I believe it's better to have a Wordpress site than a static website.

There are other very popular and powerful content management systems available (e.g., Joomla, and Drupal) that you can use to build your site. Before choosing one, I recommend you investigate and compare the learning curve required of them and the possible cost of hiring web masters, and/or programmers should you need or want to customize your site.

Of course much of this depends on whether you are a do-it-yourself type of person or not. If you are already using web master services, their current skills would be a key deciding factor in making your choice.
